Sustainable Livelihoods
The biggest challenge that vulnerable groups in farm communities, rural informal settlements and communal areas face is food insecurity and engaging in meaningful sustainable livelihoods. Farm Community Trust of Zimbabwe’s sustainable livelihoods programme aims to achieve household food security through improved agricultural production, improved dietary diversity, improved nutritional status and income generation capacity of benefiting households. The programme is being implemented in the following provinces and districts, Manicaland - Makoni district, Mashonaland East - Murehwa district, Mashonaland Central - Mazowe and Bindura districts, Mashonaland West - Makonde district. FCTZ’s Sustainable Livelihoods programme is reaching 55 000 households identified and registered as beneficiaries through the Community Profiling process. Identified beneficiaries are benefit from all or some of the following interventions:
- Agricultural Input support through an open electronic/paper voucher
- Conservation Farming (mechanized and basin based)
- Community Based plant material multiplication of virus eliminated sweet potato
- Small Livestock support
- Training in marketing and market linkages
Extension is offered to beneficiaries through FCTZ field staff working in partnership with Agritex, Department of Livestock Production and Development; and Department of Veterinary Services. Interventions under this programme are being funded by the Protracted Relief Programme and International Organization for Migration.
